I light sanding before painting. If heavy coated you will to sand most of it down otherwise it will start to flake off.

Somewhere between 60 and 80 grit sandpaper in a palm or orbital sander will work. Also you don't want to breath this so a mask is required for safety. I wear a t-vek suit with gloves also. The dusk you make is nasty.

Roger,
Does 60-80 grit paper on an orbital sander take all of the old bottom paint off? Once this is done is the hull ready to be repainted? Or do I need to whip it down with a solvent of some kind.

If using an ablative paint there is no reason to remove it all unless you want to apply a barrier coat first.

Some boaters have a hard paint of one color as their first coat , then the soft coat as their second coat as different color. This way they know when they see the hard coat color you know when it is time to repaint.

1) If you're going to remove all of the paint, you would either have it media blasted, or scrape it with a scraper. The final finish work is done with a sander. You wouldn't attempt the entire job with a solvent or sandpaper, it would take an incredibly long time.

2) once done any sanding, "Wipe" it down with a paint thinner to remove any dust.

3) You don't need to take the paint down to bare hull unless you are stripping years of built-up hard paint, or if you have serious layers of paint delamination in spots making the hull look like a relief map.

4) Follow the paint manufacturers preparation and application instructions.

5) Paint various by conditions. Petit and Interlux are the two most popular brands. Ablative is best for planing boats. Read the spec sheets to determine what best meets your needs.

Sanding is a lot of work, lots of mess.
Try Peel-Away Marine Paint stripper. Slop it on, let it work, then scrape off.
Put a large plastic tarp underneath to catch it all , then dispose.

Thank you Shrew, great step-by-step

I like the sound of the Peel-Away marine paint stripper.
