Default 1993 1800 SR Speedo

Last summer I bought a '93 1800 SR. It's in pretty good shape, but still needs some attention. Last year's major project was recovering the interior. Top of my list this year is to get the speedometer working. It has the 3.0L 4 cyl, and I believe the speedo pickup is in the outdrive. Any suggestions where to start? Is this a common issue with the boat? If it is something I could do myself I would prefer that over paying big bucks to a shop. Any ideas would be appreciated.

It is in the drive - nothing but a rubber tube that snakes its way all the way up to the back of the speedo. First, check that the tube is open (not clogged with gunk) at the drive end. Then pull the tub carefully from the speedo and try using compressed air to blow back towards the drive.
