Gas tank replacement - Maxum Boat Owners Club

So I had to replace my gas tank on my 99 maxum 2400 scr.. tank came out with out a hassle thru the engine bay without taking out the motor..I went to alloy in Farmingdale..my question is what material do you suggest to protect the tank from ever rotting again.

Don’t think one could guarantee it never corroding again. From what I have read most cost it with an epoxy such as interlux 2000.

Please post how you were able to remove it without removing engine.
I also have a 2400 with original tank.

All I did was cut the aft floor cut the aft wall in the engine bay lifted up..came out 123

Thanks, That was what I was thinking of doing when the time comes for replacement.

On my 99 "2400 SCR they left the old tank putting two new 40 gallons total. I asked to replace the tank but the mechanics tell me to land the engine. Too expensive! Do you have pictures of how the job was done? Thanks ..Armido

I believe he removed the bulkhead in front of the engine that separates the engine compartment from the midberth. Removed from hull to deck.

I asked a Mercruiser mechanic in Venice, when he did the engine storage, and he told me that the engine had to be removed ... I think he had never done this work, I will try to call the Italian dealer who still sells Bayliner. ..Armido

The bulkhead between the mid cabin and the engine bay is structural. It supports the deck above and the port and starboard hulls laterally. Without the bulkheads, the boat will flex like a plastic childrens wading pool.

With the bulkhead compromised, I certainly wouldn't life the boat in the slings of a boatlift. If fact, you'll notice the "Lift" or "slings" markers on the exterior of the hull line up with this specific bulkhead.

There is a reason the mechanic said the engine needed to be removed.

No matter what the aft wall had to be cut...there is no room to slide the gas tank into the engine bay once engine is removed.The aft wall that I cut wasn't installed to the full width of the boat to secure the bulkhead as you explained

Did you replace the bulkhead once the new tank was installed? I’m assuming you did and if so you returned the structure to support the deck and hull sides. Worst case is a little sagging may have occurred but as long as the boat sat the entire time I doubt am harm was done.

I think I understand the reason for the two tanks mounted on my 2400 ... and I think I solve in Greece with two 20 Gallons Jerry cans and a fuel pump 12 v

I didn't get the tank back as of yet...but I'm going to re support both sides of the aft...

I **** you not...my tank came out literally in 40 minutes..only thing he did was take out the tank thru the aft window. Which was absolute clever...

I assume he had to remove the window to do that. Did he pull the entire window frame out?
