Default Flooring

Hello all. With Covid still raging and no getting together with family for Christmas I'm contemplating more projects to work on on the boat. After pulling my 3300 SCR for the season besides pulling my outdrives, painting the bottom, and all the standard maintenance items I've done a few small projects. I put an outlet in my Stern shore power locker and anchor locker and ran wire between the two making basically a hidden "extension cord" for the generator so it can be run on the bow or the Stern with less set up on my part. I installed a 360 degree digital antenna on the arch (don't watch much TV on the boat but it's better than the Lowes digital antenna I was using). I installed 2 Lumitec multicolored lights under the swim platform. Recaulked the rub rail.

The project I'm thinking of now is to rip out the carpet and wood floor and replace with vinyl flooring. I'm looking at a floating floor. The product is Smartcore Pro from Lowe's. Has anyone done this? Was an underlayment used? How did you handle the hatches? Anything I need to be aware of before tackling this?

Thanks all and have a Merry Christmas!

If you rip out the wood floor, what are you going to replace it with?

Hi Shrew. My cabin is a combo of carpet and hardwood. That's the wood I was referring to. Not sure what the subfloor is.

We'll....no response from anyone about the flooring so I went for it. Yesterday stripped the hard wood and carpet from the cabin and the carpet from the aft cabin. Today my wife and I installed underlayment and flooring in the main cabin. Have 3 small pieces left to complete the main cabin but that will be next weekend. Next weekend we'll also do the aft cabin flooring and hopefully the dinette area and the step up to the forward berth. Finish off with some nosing on the transitions and done.

Hope everyone had a great Christmas.

Thanks Shrew. I'm happy with how it looks. The 20 year old carpet had to go!

Nice! I need to do something as I had to remove my old carpet due to mold a few back and it’s still the raw plywood. How is the traction of with material with wet feet?

Thanks mmwjr. The surface is not real glossy and has the texture of wood so I feel it will be ok but that remains to be seen.

Hi Steve, I’m looking to do something similar to my 2400 but want to remove all the carpet as it very worn and stained. I need to figure out what to do with the vertical sides. Considering wood, new carpet or seeing if I can apply this material there as well. I need to remove the carpet to see how flat these areas are and if not can they be made flat with a little resin and glass.

Thanks Trey5685. LOL It came out pretty good for an amateur but I've got about 27 hrs labor into it. Think I'll pass on doing another[emoji23]. Wonder how fast a professional would have knocked it out???[emoji848]

I've installed a LOT of laminate floors in 4 or 5 different houses and the hard part is always the details around the edges. I'm betting I could do a very large living room in nearly the same amount of time it takes to do the boat cabin. lots of measuring to make it just right.

yours looks awesome. Like Mike said, I'm curious on how to do the carpeting as well. if we keep our 2400 this is one of the DYI projects on the honey-do list.
