we had a very very cold weekend down on the boat this last friday. Grilled up some rockfish on the Magma and watched some TV in the cabin. Didn't leave the slip though. it was around 40F and raining. thankful for heaters!

I am a new boat owner, and as far I understand boats need to be winterize outside the water on freezing temperatures, is this a rule? because I keep on seeing boats in the water with 10 degrees fahrenheit
if there is a way to keep it in the water with freezing temperatures, can you explain?

This really depends on what boat you have and systems on board. Freshwater, heads and such need to be winterized whether it’s in the water or out. At 10 degrees a boat in the water should have its engine winterized as well. I’m not in favor of keeping any I/O equipped boat in the water that sees freezing temperatures.

It's not so much the temperature, but the time at that temperature and whether you get hard freezes. Mid Atlantic states dropping to 10F for 36 hours isn't the same as New England or the Great Lakes dropping to 20-25F for 30 days.

It's more common in places like the mid-atlantic states, however I've seen boats stored in the water year round in Boston, Ma. too.

The slips need bubblers to keep the water from freezing around the boat. freshwater systems need to be winterized, engines needs to be winterized. That is, unless there is heat running internally on the boats, and the boat is used on a daily basis.

Not too bad... Nice picture. What's the temp this year? New England has been a roller coaster this year temperature wise.

Our winters run from end Nov to end Feb. Normally get a couple cold snaps that last for a week or so below freezing and we'll get snow (this year record amount). The rest of the time is from say 5 to 10c overcast and rain. When the sun comes out, days can get to 10+, but the nights get down to near freezing. Southern Vancouver Island and her sister Gulf Islands are by far the most temperate climates in Canada (only place where Madrona Trees grow).

Image was taken Jan.8 '22, during a cold snap, and this was record breaking: minus 12c and we had a lot of snow. I had never seen the ocean here freeze like it did that day, and I was born in 1970.

hopefully no damage. we are just south of you in the Tacoma area and I was shocked by how much snow we had on the boat, as well as the water freezing up as well.

Thanks for the concern Dustin, I think our PNW is out of winter now! Been out few times and no damage thankfully. Got really lucky and the 2 heaters (cabin and bilge) worked it seems.

definitely getting closer. we have still had a few days below freezing since that storm blew through. I doubled down with a second heater on the boat this year. so far so good...
