Default Trailer question - Escort trailer issue?

Here's a issue with a patriotic theme... I was trailering my boat home last night after spending the evening anchored in the Charles River in Boston, when about 1/2 way home a car pulls along side of me and the driver yells over "Hey! There are sparks coming from the right wheel on your trailer!!". So, I pull over and sure enough, the right wheel is smoking, sizzling and stinks like a fresh weld job. So, I limped home and took a look at the wheel this morning. I can't seem to find anything visually wrong with the wheel - tons of lube is the bearing housing. Im leaning towards a locked brake (surge brakes), but not certain.

Has anyone experienced something like this? If so, what was it, and what did you do to fix it?

Thanks!
Steve

Default Upon further inspection...

No matter what it is, it's never a good thing when you open something up and little pieces start falling out.
Looks like I left a bread crumb trail made of inner bearings from the launch to my house! Needless to say, Im probably looking at a new spindle, bearings, seals, etc... On the flip side, plenty of life left in the brake pads.
