Question Help first season maintenance!

I just acquired a 1998 2400 SCR 5.0 L from the original owner. Since his children moved out of the house he has stopped using it. So it had been regularly maintained every season by a pro until either 2013-2014.

Then maybe a last summer he went to just take it out and maybe run it a little just to keep it working and he had a over heating issue. It would remain cool until he attempted to pick up speed. So he believes it could be a stuck lifter? He never pushed it, it got warm he shut it down and then once it was ok, brought it back and parked it. So hopefully no further damage done!

But we want to do some regular maintenance that we can personally tackle plus address that issue afterwards. So any help with the areas most would focus plus any tips on this would be useful. I will add more info as we get into the boat! Also any websites or threads that would help would be appreciated!

I'd replace the impeller to start with. Then start digging deeper, such as manifolds and risers.

Welcome aboard

This has nothing to do with a lifter.

Do you have an Alpha drive? As shrew said replace the impeller and if it's an Alpha this will require a gear lube change which I would recommend anyway.

If you still have overheating issues inspect the exhaust system as it is water cooled. If salt water it will need to be replaced if never done.

Change the engine oil.

Anodes yearly if kept in the water.

His old are the bellows?

impeller should have been the first thing changed. if it totally fails pieces can get lodged in your cooling system.
