Default Gas Cap safety

My 2004 Maxum 2400SD has a fuel cap that is not attached to anything for safety. Is this year suppose to have a safety chain on the deck plate?

FLL,

My 2004 2400 SC3, which should be very similar to your SD, does have a safety chain connecting the gas cap to the filler assembly, and I'm pretty certain it is original to the boat.

Probably a replacement cap after the original chain broke and the cap went in the water.

My 1997 2400 SCR has a small cable connecting the cap to the fill assembly.
