Default Engine Oil

What are people using besides the standard Merc 25W40 oil. Seems hard to find around my location...any thoughts on a substitute?????

I use the merc stuff, can you find a similar marine grade oil of the same weight?

A lot of big box stores have it where you can order it online and have it delivered or pick it up at the store..can't get any easier than that!

25w40 is sold under the following brands: Mercury, Mercruiser, Quicksilver. They are all the same thing. The only thing to note is whether it's Regular Oil, Synthetic Blend or Synthetic. Use whatever has been used all along. If the boat has been using regular oil, I would not switch to a synthetic or synthetic blend.

If you can't find it, order it.

I use Rotella T 15w40 in my engines. Its a heavier duty oil, with much more wear-control additives. It's also widely available and relatively inexpensive.

I actually use it in all my vehicles with the exception of one. My lawn tractor, weed eater, ford truck, Cummins diesel, and even my Honda generator. Never ever had an oil related issue.

+1

Being a newbie to boats, and particularly my 2001 Maxum 1800SR, I searched around this forum and found that information about using Rotella, which made me happy, because I faithfully use it in my old diesel Mercedes wagon. Approaching 300,000 miles and going strong.
Rotella seems to be doing a great job in the Maxum, too!
