Cutless Bearing??? - Maxum Boat Owners Club

I have owned 5 boats over the last 25+ years with our 3700 SCR being the first inboard.

Weekend before last while idling into the marina I heard a faint high pitch squeal from the starboard side when I shifted from forward to neutral. It only lasted about two seconds as the prop freewheeled. It happened every time I made the change from F to N, nothing while in gear. This past weekend the same sound started coming from the port side and again only a couple seconds after being placed in N from F.

Is this a sign of a Cutless bearing issue?

My average speed for the last year is 5.7 MPH and I average 30 miles, 50 weekends a year. I plan on hauling her out this fall to have the hull redone. I hope this issue can hang on that long.

I would appreciate any comments.

I really don't know about the cutless bearings...not having ever owned one other than what I've seen on destroyers and battleships and all....but if your getting that kind of noise when shifting..I'd either suspect a belt or the cutless....needs to be checked out...a diver can go under and shake the shaft to see if it moves around...if not...then you will have to pull the boat and check it out...

Thanks for the article. I plan on going under and taking a look this weekend. And too see if I can feel any movement when I lift on the prop.

Went under the boat and everything is tight. Question - how hard is it to turn a V-drive prop by hand. I had to grab it with both hands and put a lot of muscle in to get it to move. Both props were the same.

ou need a prop puller.......not an easy thing to do while in the water...

I am not wanting to take them off. Just wanted to spin them around by hand. Your typically stern drive prop can be spun with one finger. My V-drive props take a lot of effort to get them to budge.
