Default At a Loss W/Power Steering

I have a 1989 Maxum with the 5.0 mercruiser and an alpha one. Im unsure of whether I need a new pump or hoses or how to check. (Not a boat mechanic by no means.) My next question...If i do need a new pump, which ones will work or can I make work with this motor. Im wanting to go out this weekend but won't if I cant resolve this issue. Thanks in advance for any help.

First why do you think something is wrong, what are the symptoms?

The PS pump is a standard Saginaw pump used by GM but the regulator is set for a different pressure. This unscrews from the back of the pump and can be swapped into a auto pump if required.
