Default 1999 2100SR Parts/overheating

I would like to go ahead and get parts/pricing info on manifolds, risers, thermostat, temp sender, etc., because my overheating alarm is going off (even though it only shows 175 when it happens). Where are you guys ordering mercruiser parts? I would also like to find a parts manual for my boat. Any ideas? I have the 5.0L, thats about all I know about the engine so far. Only had the boat about a month and I love it, but I would like to go ahead and get some stuff ordered to prevent any issues. Does anyone know at what temp the alarm should be going off? 175 seems pretty early (low) for an alarm. Makes me wonder if either I'm running hotter than the gauge is reading, or if my alarm sender is bad? Either way, I'd like to play it safe and order everything that I know I am eventually going to need anyway.

You need a mercruiser parts list for the engine. I recommend that you try to download or buy a manual.

First thing I would do is use a hand held IR temp sensor to verify engine and exhaust temps.

175 is normal for an open cooling system.

BTY the alarm is tied to 3 warning sensors; temp, oil pressure, and lube monitor for the drive. Are you sure its a temp issue?

Yes, I'm sure its a temp issue. The alarm goes off when I go over 175 every time. When I back off the throttle and bring the temp back under 175 it stops. It makes me wonder if my temp gauge is off and I'm actually getting hotter than it is reading. I may get an IR temp sensor at harbor freight or something if replacing the impeller doesn't resolve it.

How do I get a parts manual for the boat itself? or does anyone even carry Maxum parts anymore? Any good resources for boat parts? I have a latch that I need to replace that I am trying to source through southco, but would love to see an illustrated parts breakdown of the entire boat for future reference.

Not sure but try maxumcustomer care site for a manual.

However things like latches came from Perko or some other supplier. Maxum just built the hull, deck, ...

Greatlakeskipper bought up some of the surplus parts.

Check my post back in 2013. I have issues with my 2004 2400 with the warning horn sounding for no apparent reason.

UPDATE:

Warning horn seems to activated by small roll back of the throttle not as I have posted about rough water. All oil levels/pressures/temperature are normal but a small correction in engine throttle seems to set it off.

After another trip out on the water, and monitoring the guages more closely, it seems that the alarm goes off when I'm hitting 200 deg. So its definitely time for an impeller and if that doesn't fix it, I'll be doing manifolds and risers. Now to source the parts. Its an Alpha one Gen two 5.0L merc. It looks like these parts are pretty easy to find. Any suggestions on brand, or is OE pretty much the standard?

For the impeller I prefer OEM. If you replace the exhaust aftermarket is ok just do not go with the lowest such as GLM.

You are welcome my friend.

Have you replaced an impeller before? With the Alpha its located in the lower unit. The gear lube must be drained, shifter in forward, remove zinc to access 1 hidden bolt, remove other nuts, pull off lower unit.

The engine and outdrive are Mercruiser. You wouldn't need a Maxum Parts list. You would need a Mercruiser service manual for the size and year Mercruiser engine installed. Any mercruiser dealer or dealer of Brunswick boats can order mercruiser parts (Bayliner, Searay, etc).

The high temp alarm going off at 200 is normal. Water boils at 212 F.

Start with the impellor, then look at manifolds and risers.

MMWJR,
Just replaced it tonight. Not a hard job. Only special tool I needed was the gear lube pump as to not set the lower end up to cavitate. Only problem was (as suspected) is that the old impeller looked brand spankin new. But I did find a lot of rust chunks throughout my disassembly, which most definitely points to manifolds and riser time. Yay. Just what I wanted to do one month after buying a boat. Guess thats the name of the used game huh?

Shrew,
Maybe I didn't articulate clearly that I was also looking for a parts breakdown for the boat itself. I would like to see an illustrated parts breakdown of my boat. This would really help in the future for hardware and other things that I may want to find. I figure part numbers will help in my search to find or cross-reference discontinued maxum parts.

Could also be a bad t-stat.

Kind of shot gunning this, I would get a handheld IR temp sensor to check temps and what is hotter than it should be. Since helm is reading hot the impeller, t-stat, and circulating pump are things I would first suspect. Exhaust is down stream and lots of time does not result in the helm gauge reading hot.

Whit that said being that you do not know the condition of the exhaust I would pull the elbow and inspect the water jackets for corrosion.

Ok Mike, call me AJ....and guess what, just passed a Harbor Freight being built near us. Score! I'm not a fan of cheap tools, but if it's "use once and destroy", why the heck not.

AJ I hope you are not waiting for them to finish building the store to buy the IR sensor

Some of there stuff actually last for 2 or more uses
