Default Speed creeping up

I have a 1800SR and when trying to wake board we get on the plane then bring the throttle back so as we get about 18mph. But the throttle tends to slowly still climb in speed. So when you bring it back it gets too slow and increase it again, and obviously this is not ideal for wakeboarding with a jerkyness motion!

Any ideas?

I wonder if something like the perfect pass would help. I honestly don't know that much about it, but there is an active thread on it:

Otherwise, I might look at how much slop is in the throttle cable. I wonder if vibration is advancing the throttle and with too much play in the cable, there's not enough force to hold the throttle from advancing. I'm talking about the cable connection on the engine side, not the throttle arm at the helm.

Does they throttle literally move forward by itself. Or are you saying that the boat picks up speed while the throttle remains in a constant position?

Appears that the throttle remains at a constant position and without touching it either the speed increases gradually or decreases gradually. It makes a real difference when wakeboarding. Unfortunately perfect pass is close to £1000 to install, out of my price range! Would a hydrofoil on the stern drive help?

I think I know what is happening. As your boat begins to come up on plane it begins to move through the water more efficiently, the more efficient it becomes the faster it goes. As you move the throttle back to compensate, the boat begins to fall off plane and will continue to get slower and slower. This cycle will continue over and over again unless you can stay on plane at a lower speed. A hydrofoil may help. Others have tried automatic trim tabs with good results.

That sounds plausable. I think I'll start with a hydrofoil first. Trim tabs arent in the budget this year.

After reading tglee's response, I re-read the original post. 18mph. I'm leaning towards tglee. I'm not familiar with the boat, however I bet at 18mph towing a skier/boarder, you're probably right on the edge of getting up on plane and falling off again.

I think tglee is correct it is not the throttle advancing but decreasing load as the boat free's its self from the resistance of the water. Smart tabs will help and are very cost effective just put them on my 19 and they really do what they say on the tin.... much less bowrise smoother transition to plane, better ride and handling especially at low speed no more constant course corrections, generally make the boat feel more grown up!
