Default Problem with Ignition / Stater

Hi all, I am new here. I have a Maxum 1997 20ft Speed boat with a Mercruiser (Alpha one) 3.0L/LX Engine.I replaced my ignition switch today, as I thought it may have been corroded and causing my problem, but it didn't.

When I turn the key, I hear a clicking noise, but the engine doesn't turn over. When I turn the key very slowly, sometimes the starter engages and the engine starts. but its random, Its like I need the key in just the right place. The Battery is new and fully charged. I am not sure if this is a starter issue or not. I am hoping the community here can help and may know what my problem is.

Thanks,

Dean

Welcome aboard!

Make sure the battery cables are clean and tight at both ends for the positive and negative ones. If that checks out I would next look at the slave soleniod which is next to the engine breaker as your symptoms fit the mold for it being bad. About $25 for a new one.

Thank you Mike. I have ordered a new Slave Solenoid which should arrive tomorrow. I will install that and let you know if that fixed the problem. I did some "Googleing" and found that seems like its a popular issue. If anyone has any advice on how to install that would be great. I couldn't find much info online about that.

Thanks again,

Dean

Dean it’s pretty simple, 2 mounting bolts, 2 large wires on studs and 2 small wires on studs. To remove the wires just remove the nut and washer from each and reverse to install.

Welcome
To be safe remove one wire at a time and reinstall in same position on new solenoid.

Mike, thank you! I changed the Slave Solenoid today, and that fixed the problem. She starts perfect every time now.

Don, I did what you recommended and had no problems. Thanks for your input

Just need some sun now!
