Welcome aboard!

Typically when the PS cooler leaks the PS fluid which is under higher pressure leaks into the raw water side and exits the boat leaving an oil sheen on the water behind the boat. I guess once the fluid level gets low enough water can then enter the system and get into the pump. This would be the only way I know of water getting into the pump. You can remove the cooler and temporarily close off the PS fluid side with hose clamps and a bolt. On one end figure out how to plumb in a Schroeder valve so you can pressurize it to about 5 lbs and see if it hold pressure or if you can hear air coming out the water ports.
