Default No start after shift bellow replace

Hi all, I replaced my shift bellow and cable this morning only to find my running boat is no longer starting. I cranked on it for a good while and stopped when I saw (and could smell) the starter wire smoke a little.

I had the boat in forward gear during most of the process, is it possible she flooded out? (Without the key on and the fuel pump not running?).

My thought is maybeasy during routing of the shift cable assembly I pulled the plug coil or something. Any ideas?

Edit: it rolls over fine, it's just not getting fuel or spark (guessing). Unless there is something I'm missing with the shift cable install.

Check the safety lanyard switch to verify its in the run position.

check that the neutral safety switch is not engaged. if you were changing out the shift cable maybe it is out of adjustment. the motor thinks it is in gear and will not start.

Will the motor turn over if in gear? I would think not.

Thanks for the reply all, I wanted to update the issue. The problem turned out to be that it was binding where it passes through the hole in the transom. Apparently when I put it in it was just at a bad enough angle to bind up. The symptoms originally where it would run fine, and forward gear was ok, but reverse would kill the engine because it was binding up and shorting out the shift interrupt switch.

I tweaked and tweaked the cable and assumed it was just out of adjustment, but my problem was always constant. Found the issue when I pulled the cable out again and felt the bind.
