Default More HP from 5.0

O.K. my outdrive is finally rebuilt and I am thinking about doing a little work to the engine . It's got a 220 HP 5.0 , we know the alpha drive drive can handle up to 300 HP . Any ideas on how to get a reliable 50 HP increase ?

Glad the drive is fixed Keith.

Lots of ideas on how to get a reliable 50 HP/Tq increase, unfortunately none of them are through the use of easy "bolt on's".

Air flow. The 5.0 probably uses the same exhaust system as the 5.7 so the exhaust shouldn't be too much of a restriction. You may be able to gain some by going to a better flowing carb and intake but again, since the 5.0 is the same block as the 5.7, it may also use the same carb/intake. But even if the 5.7 uses a better flowing induction system you're still not going to get 50 with that change alone. So that leaves you with cylinder heads, displacement, and cam. Of these, better flowing heads would get you there, and adding a cam with more intake and exhaust valve lift, while keeping duration close to the same (to preserve a decent idle and good low and mid RPM torque) should do the trick.

Regards,

Dan

i think that will cost you a lot of money, so maybe it's an option to look for a second hand block with the power you want (but the boat you own, reach a nice speed, so why more HP) and trade your old block in.....

good luck, ed

well...my thought is that your hp quest will require either a complete tear down and change of major parts...or...replace the engine with a 5.7ltr engine...that will give you more bang for the buck in my opinion...the 5.7ltr mpi engine is 350 hp ...that will make your eyes water when you push on the throttles...but...any increase in hp will also require a serious thought on the outdrive...the a1g2 drive is almost at it's limit with 220hp...over 300 hp would tear it apart....

to just add 50hp...I'd change the cam..port the heads a bit....either change the 2bbl carb to a larger spreadbore q-jet carb and intake...or go mpi...that's about the easest..but with the change to mpi...your going to need to mod the fuel tank as well as the fuel pump/fuel filtration ....don't get me wrong...it's all doable...but how much do you want to do..for doable...?? :|

just my humble opinion...

what i found on the internet for you is the next.......a 5.7 ltr with 260 hp gives you a max speed of 35 knots (40.3 mls) , if you change her to a 320 hp you can expect a 47 knots (54.1 mls) and with a 350 hp 51 knots (58.7 mls)

you have a 5.0 ltr 220 hp with a topspeed of 31 knots (35.7 mls)

i think the maximum you can reach with your own block and tail is a change up to 260/270 hp your topspeed will change with a 4 knots (4.6 mls) and an investment of a "few" dollars

if you change her from a 220 to a new or second hand block and tail from 320/350 hp your topspeed will change with a 16 or 20 knots ( 18.4 or 23.0 miles).......and thats fun....but you won't reach that with your own block as already told by seapuppy, it's too much power for a too small block and tail...

so i think....an investment of a lot of money for only a little more top......no way

so i think....an investment of a lot of money for a lot more top......yes sir (trade in your block and tail for a 320/350 block and tail.)

or another option...... sell the boat and look for a 2300 with 350 hp if trading in the block is more expensive than a new boat with a 350 hp

i'll hope this gives you some more information to think about, so that you can make the reight decission.....

good luck, ed.... :hello: :hello: :hello:

Come on gentlemen, swapping engines and out drives isn't "a little work". Then again, I suppose one could argue that swapping cylinder heads and cams isn't "a little work" either! LOL.

Correction though, the 350 MAG MPI engine doesn't have 350 HP, it's rated at 300. Pretty sure there was a carbed version of the 300 HP 350 also.

Keith, don't know how deep into that 5.0 you want to get. Valid points were made however. Perhaps the most fool proof way would be to source a 350 CI long block and then swap all the stuff from the 305 onto the 350. More HP and, more importantly, more torque.

I guess there's no low buck way around this , I bought this boat to introduce my wife to a new experience . I thought while I was at it , I could get a little more speed to keep me happy . My last boat was a 25 ' Baja . The speed demon has not left my blood stream yet . Thanks for the input.

This was a good question and great ideas to ponder..cash will be spent either way! I've had little epxerience building hot rod motors and the best bang for my buck would be a head job, port and polish cylinder heads or buy new versions with better flow of intake qand exhaust valves-then upgrade the cam shaft which will cost a fortune, plus the labor or pull the old stuff off, and tuning the bugs out of it as well-I could turn into one nasty experience!

You may hit over 300HP, which you need to have a look at the outdrive then..more $$$

*****
Im gonna rain on your parade, drive the boat you have and enjoy your time on the water. Look into upgrade into a different boat with the options you are looking for already installed (HP amd outdrive ratings)-there's no easy way to figure this one out!
