Default Mercruiser shift cable interrupter switch repositioned

Hi, sailors!

What do you think of this solution? I think it could work to solve the problem of the gear shift and engine stalling in a Mercruiser MPFI.

I'm not clear what problem you're having that needs to be solved.

That seems to work but a properly adjusted shift cable works well for the majority of Alpha Mercruisers out there. Note that old shift cables can have too much drag and need to be replaced to ensure proper operation. Another solution is to get a Bravo drive which has a cone clutch that doesn’t need the shift interrupt switch.

I've had a Mercruiser Alpha One MPFI for 17 years.

For the last five seasons, I've been adjusting it myself, then going to mechanics who adjust or replace the starter cable, charging me a fortune, and then the problem reappears shortly after.

The problem, as you can imagine, is that it's difficult to shift into reverse or neutral without it stalling.

I've studied countless similar problems; some have solutions, while others, like mine, seem to remain unresolved.

Tired of always trying the same thing, I found this short video and I'm doing the same thing. It's worth a try, after all...

I've made good progress, and I'll try it this weekend!

And I'll let you know...

Cheers!

With Mercruisers design the ignition is only stumbled when shifting out of gear to remove load from the dig clutch. With your design the engine is stumbled when shifting in and out of gear. There is a stalling potential with this when shifting into gear as the engine loses power at the same time load is added by going into gear. Let us know how this works out for you.
