Default Lower gearcase

I know what the Mercruiser manual says, but why cant you remove ane reinstall it in reverse?
Its a royal BPITB to try and keep it in foreward when it wants to slip into reverse by its self.
Thanks

Don

If you are only removing the lower housing you may be able to do so Don but if you pull the entire drive it must be in forward so the the shift shoe and shift lever are facing forward to allow for them to separate as the drive is pulled off or installed. When just doing the lower with the drive raised the dog clutch wants to slide forward into gear which is why they recommend doing so in forward.

Mike
I know I am old but I remember the drive slipping into reverse.
Like I say I am getting old and I may be mistaken.
But yes I am only removing the lower gear case, so I will ck and see what happens.
Thanks

Don

Post how it goes. The forward gear is the one forward in the housing and with the drive tilted up the dog clutch due to gravity wants to slide forward but that doesn’t mean the shift lever is guaranteed to be in the forward position which is why you need to hold slight pressure by Turing the prop shaft counter clockwise very slightly.

Just an update,
The drive went back on ok, found that it does not slip into reverse.
Must have been a different outdrive, I have had a few.

Did you install it in forward or neutral?
