Default Hello and Engine Change Questions

Hi All been reading through your forum and now have a couple of questions

I've been offered a maxum 1900 SR bowrider for the right price but it has a siezed engine (Mercruiser 4.6 with Alfa one leg)

Would I be able to phyiscally fit a 5.7 MPI in there and would the power distroy the boat? (supposed to be about 320 BHP) also would I need to change the leg?

Thanks in advance

The 350 mag will fit as its physically the same size as a 5.0l mpi which was offered on the options list. I think the engine mounts will be in a different position from the v6 and the Alpha one drive will be at its limit. I would imagine it would be a fair bit of work but it Should go well when its finished! Another one from Notts

Hi Thanks for the reply

The engine I've found is a EFI not an MPI not sure of the difference.

So it might be a go then, that sounds good

Would be good to be able to keep the alpha 1 keep the costs down a little

All these people on here and someone from notts replies, so my next question So where do you use your boat? I've been looking at clubs and things but don't really want to be tied to one place.

the 5.7efi engine would probably be too much for the alpha one drive....or as stated...right at the limit....a 5.0mpi would be a better fit...same basic block and the drive would handle it better cuz the torque and horsepower wouldn't be too high..but would definitely make the boat fly....
the sbc engine won't fit the same motor mount location so you'd have to fill the existing ones and re-drill the new ones....might be tight in the engine bay cuz it's designed for the v6....but it would work...

let us know what you do....

Gaz,
My Maxum is currently on park and launch in pwllheli and I plan on trailering it to Devon and Loch Lomond in summer. I don't think there is much locally, some ski clubs on the trent and at Chasewater.
FYI there is a general boating forum (for the brit contingent) on the sportboat magazine website also includes useful info on UK launch sites. Quite a few people with Maxums on there also on here.

EFI engine is earlier version of MPI.

Regards
Chris

Hi All

Well in short the sale fell through. So I've brought it

Can't get hold of the guy who had the 5.7 EFI

So I will probably be boring you all with countless questions while I try and get the boat up to spec,

Going to see how bad the current engine is (Seized at the moment)

But will be keeping a look out for a bigger engine to play with.

Gaz - it may be worth shipping an engine in from the states. Grab a copy of this months Sportsboat and Rib mag - it talks about buying engines from the states.

I ship regular containers from the US so if you wanted to have the engine crated and then sent to from my US facility to the UK I would happily bring it in for you far cheaper than any UK shipper will - around 300 quid I reckon tops.

That sounds great

I'll get a copy and have a scan

While we are on the subject are the maxum body parts easy enough to get? need a couple of cup holders and dash trim if there not silly money.

Thanks!

Hmm.. depends what you need.

Have you got the brown coloured metal dash trim that has the bubbly paint problem? If so the best advice is tot remove it, sand it and re-paint or ideally have it powder coated. if you really want it looking snazzy and don't mine spending a little money get it brushed and anodised.

For cup holders just replace them all with these - much better in the long run and look 10 times better than the plastic ones (especially once the plastic onces have got stained) - http://www.wakeside.com/product/boat...+inch.do<br />
Hope that helps.

Hi

Cheers for the link I'll get some of those ordered

Picked the boat up today 450 mile round trip

Got it home ok, Boats ok but needs lots of TLC engine is seized and had a look over it today and it looks like salt water has got in the left bank of cylinders

I've got penertrating oil sat in the bores at the moment, will take the head off tomorrow if it still won't turn

I after a manual for it to can't seem to find one for a 96 sr also I have two banks of switches that don't seem to do anything apart from light up the dash and make a little display come on next to the switches But thats a later job

Also looking through the history someone has paid over £300 in labour to change a starter motor!!!

Anyway thats enough boring you all for now

Thanks again

anyone got a 4.3 lying about they don't want?

Gaz, you can pick up a rebuild in South Africa (4.3l Mercruiser)) for around 3500 sterling (ZAR 50 000). don't know how this compares? :?:
