Black smoke is a sign of too much fuel. Carburetor too rich or dripping after the engine is turned off. Do you have a hard time getting it started?

BTY Blue smoke would be burning oil and White smoke would be water.

Three pumps on the throttle and she starts good, the engine does have a tendency to 'jump around' for a few minutes too ~

John,

Do you have a hard time restarting the engine after running for awhile then shutting it off at anchor?

After the first start, a restart is good (this past weekend did 20 miles, with a break half way for lunch, ran sweet) ~

What you have described sounds like valve seal/guide leaking oil down. This typically only blows smoke when starting but the smoke would be a dark blue not black. Have you tried smelling the smoke?

Thank you: that sounds like the cause and maybe it is blue smoke (aged eye sight), and I must admit, I'm not into sniffing exhaust smoke
Thank you all ~~
