Default 1997 2300sr stalls after getting hot

Hello all, newby to the boating community.
I recently picked up a 1997 2300. Took
It out to the lake For the test drive and had to Give it some gas to start. I figured bad gas from sitting over the winter. So I pumped some fresh gas in and the family and I get out on the water . Started right up. We cruise for about an hour , and stop to get the tube out . Won’t start . Have to go
To full throttle and after 15 seconds of cranking it lights . Isles normal . So here we go again , this time dragging a tube , I slow down to a no wake and it dies . Same thing , full throttle and 15-20 seconds of cranking it starts . First thing I will check is a fuel/water condition. To
Me it sounds like a vapor lock or an overheat condition , but temps are normal ? Was wondering if y’all had any other insight?

Also I Noticed on the back side of the carb there is a nipple With no hose attached , which may be the issue? Like I said new to the boat and won’t be around it for 4 more days just trying to get some insight.

Welcome aboard!

With the flame arrestor removed and the engine warmed up shut it off and look in the carb to see if fuel is dripping in the ventures. May need a rebuild as it sounds like a flooding issue. Is the port on the carb plugged? Can you post a picture of the carb?

I will be able to when I get home in about 10 hours . Seems like manuals are hard to find? I’m sure there are more than one carb option on this motor? Do they sell rebuild kits or do I have to order everything individually. The port is opened, it looks as if the hose was just broke cause I have a Hose that is routed to the carb that isn’t attached to anything but is missing a section as it’s about 10 inches short. Also
To note after trailering it home I decided to look at the carb and I took off the flame arrewtor . I don’t know if I touched something with the arrester or when I was pulling it off but It speakers and had a carb fire. So maybe it is leaking and needs a rebuild

Carburetor kits are available.

Under Documents of this site you can find the manuals for your engine and drive.

The wires that aren’t connected that go to the unit on the side of the carb, is that the electric choke ?

That’s a Mercruiser 2bbl carb, part is marked on it and that is what you’ll need to determine the rebuild kit. The electric choke already has its two wires on it. The extra purple and black are for test purposes.

thank you for all the help. I am planning on taking it on the water Thursday to put a load on the engine and check the carb to see if its leaking excess fuel down the throat. I plan on emptying the fuel/water sep ( i plan on changing it but has not arrived yet). anything else i can check that would cause a no start unless its at full throttle? also do the carb models have a idle air control ? i tried downloading service manuals but it wont let me. any idea?

You should be able to download the manuals now. I think you need to have 5 posts before you get permissions to download from the documents.

so I was able to download the service manual. can anyone determine if i have a the IV Or V Ignition system? i see on the V you have to lock the timing when adjusting your idle mixture. If i didnt see any fuel going down the throat my next option would of been that, but im not trying to go thru the whole timing light on the water.

My 1997 has a Thunderbolt V. Can you post a close up of the distributor?

Check the gaskets under the carb, there is a 1/2” spacer, on mine the carb was a bit loose and would lift slightly under load causing a lean condition and when you would go back to idle it would stall. This was the last thing I checked and it worked for me, rebuilt the carb at the same time as I had it of to replace the dried up gaskets on the carb spacer. Good luck Troy

Well we took it out today . After it stalled I pulled the spark arrestor off and saw raw fuel . Time for a rebuild. I’m trying to find a pn for the rebuild kit ? Any ideas ? Also can’t find a pn on the carb. I will take it off the engine tomorrow to see if it’s on the back side where I can’t see . Thanks all for the slick troubleshooting .

https://www.carburetor-parts.com/Mer...it_p_3483.html

This is the kit I used - Mercarb 2 barrel, you can find a descent video on you tube as well. It took me a solid month to finally get the boat running like new again, nice to get the "Boat Monkey" off my back & out of my wallet. Painful to say the least but better weather is on the way and looking forward to it...problem free. Good Luck.

The carb will have a part number stamped on it.

Looks like the coil is leaking oil, I’d replace it.

Once I get the carb rebuilt and out of the way I will get new ignition components . As for the carb, I read that I have to ground a wire on the coil to lock the timing when adjusting the idle mixture? Is this true or can I just rebuild it and put it back to the original setting and adjust from there ?
