Default 1 in a million hit on debris.

So just as the heading states. I hit something in the water. There is a 1/4 of the skeg left and a chip out of the propeller. I had no clue there was ant damage done to the lower end till I took it out of the water. The question is that I have a 19’ maxim bow rider. It has a alpha 1 outdrive. Would that be a gen 1 or gen 2? Also every outdrive I see for sale is missing the propellers. What do I need? I’m thinking about going stainless. Is that a good idea?

What year is your boat? That can help determine Gen 1 or 2 as well as the serial number will be able to tell you.

You can always purchase a bolt on skeg guard to replace the missing lower portion, as long as there is no damage to the gear housing (I would pressure test), lower units are quite expensive to replace and I wouldn’t just toss it until confirming it is unsalvageable

Stainless props are very expensive and there are many opinions on them, IMO I would rather have an aluminum prop that will bend and break as opposed to transferring possible damage into the gear housing if an impact occurs.

Yes need to know what year to determine if it’s a gen 1 vs Gen 2.

Skeg gaurd is an easy repair however if the aluminum is good a new piece can be welded on.

If the prop was SS you most likely would have bent the prop shaft or done gear damage. Much easier to have the aluminum prop repaired or replaced.

It’s an 1989. Sorry I forgot that part. As for a weld on skeg that is something I can do. Are props interchangeable as long as they are the same size blade? I have never taken one apart and replaced one so I have no clue if there is some kind of shaft or something. Thanks guys in advanced. Mmwjr this is not the first time you have helped.

You have a A1G1 as the Gen 2 came out in 1991.

No there are different size hubs as the propel shafts differ between manufactures. Lots of newer props have interchangeable hubs so it's the same prop and you buy the hub for you drive.

You will need a TIG or MIG welder since it's aluminum.

You can call me Mike.
