speedometer not working

Hi again all, Just got my new to me used 1992 18ft maxum in the water for the first time and much was great and a few small things to repair. Noticed that the speedometer was not working at all. does anyone have a good sugestion as to what to check first so I don't try the hardest and most costly thing first, I'm good at that. Thanks in advance you guys have been great, scott
