Default Shore Power Indicator Lights

Hi all,

New poster/owner. I plugged in shore power today and neither (I have two) indicator lights came up. However, when I flipped the switch I got power. I'm pretty particular with things so does anyone know how I go about changing out the bulbs and where to even get them? I'm guessing I might have to pop the panel out.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Never had to do it but yes the panel will need to come out. Did you have good power? If there is a reverse polarity some lights don’t come on and others flicker. This is a sign that the hot and neutral wires are swapped at the pier.

Yeah, the power was fine and I was never worried about it at my marina. Just wanted to have a 'feel good' with the lights working. Thanks for the info!

My lights flicker now and then but the voltage is good.

Indicator lights can be found at electronics stores or some chandlers:

On our 1999 4100 SCA the maxum part number is 11521. Can't find anything to cross with it, but have written the original manufacture, SoLiCo to see if they can help.

Well, quick response from SoLiCo Part number 3450-4-50-19314
Available from Custom Marine Services

Note, size might be a little different than your current cut out - I'll check mine out just to see if it's close enough.

With so little long distance cruising the last two years, the budget for fuel meant plenty of loose change ($82.60 @ Custom Marine) to splurge and get stuff that wasn't necessary, but I still wanted to replace the dim/out lights. SO HAPPY I did ... piece of mind is worth the $$ when you have it available. Easy wiring. Snap in fit was perfect.

Easy fix and makes things look 'right'/'nice' ... bit pricey, but I think it was worth it.

Agree bit pricey, but feel better knowing connection is ok. One thing though, the green light comes on as soon as I plug the line into the boat, even before I switch power on, is that right?

I suppose it simply depends on how you have your breaker line up when you're on/off shore power. On our 1999 4100 SCA, there is only one breaker between shore power and those lights (I call it the Boat's Shore Power breaker).

Here's how I do it. Start the engines, and bump fwd and reverse - no reason to get underway if those aren't going to cooperate.

Strip loads (turn off, open breaker(s)) for AC items that I won't be using when underway (battery charger & ACs). We have an inverter that powers the hotel loads we use underway.

Open main AC breakers (2) on the Power distribution panel in saloon. Go to swim platform and Open boat's shore power breaker (in the 'tub' on the swim deck). Open dockside pedestal breaker. Verify no power on cable's boat end (mine has a little blue LED to show it's energized). Detach shore power cable from pedestal and stow.

After docking. Check shore power cable connection to boat is tight. Connect shore power cable to pedestal. Shut pedestal breaker. Verify power to boat end of cable. Shut boat's shore power breaker. Go into boat and verify 'good' power on Power distribution panel (here's where your new lights are the 'last line of defense'). If the shore power is reversed, no harm no foul, the only thing 'seeing' power are the lights. If 'good' shut the main AC breakers and line up Distribution panel for in port.

Interesting, I have a 1999 2400 SCR with no inverter. So all I'm doing is plugging in the shore line when docked. As mention, as soon as I do that the light is green, even before I turn the switch to the on position. So on or off the green light stays on. So would guess I'm good as long as the red light stays off.

Sounds right ... first thing the power coming into your boat 'sees' is the reverse polarity light; doesn't go any further until you shut the next breaker to power your distribution panel. That way you know if the juice is good before your entire boat 'seeing' it.

Default green again!

easy fix, 4 screws, 3 clips. Wonder how long it was out for, I've had the boat less than a year.

Who can teach me how to properly use shore power?
What to connect first, the shore or the boat?
Do the batteries have to be switched off or can I use 12V?

Not sure of your set up on the 2400. Here is the set up on our 1999 4100 SCA (single chord, 50 Amp) - traveling from the shore power pedestal to a breaker on the AC distribution panel.

Bringing shore power on.
A) Ensure Shore Power Pedestal breaker (1), Boat input breaker (5), and AC panel supply breakers (7) are OPEN.
B) Plug shore power cable (3) to pedestal and boat (make sure good fit on both ends)
C) CLOSE the Shore Power Pedestal breaker (1)
D) Verify cable is powered. Our shore power cable has an LED light that lights up when it has power to it ... yours may not, if so, just skip this step.
E) CLOSE Boat input breaker (5)
F) Verify 'good' power at the Reverse polarity indicator light (6)
G) CLOSE Shore power AC panel supply breaker (7). Check for proper/good voltage on the voltage meter.
H) Close individual breakers on AC Distribution panel as desired

Taking shore power off.
A) Close individual breakers on AC Distribution panel as desired
B) OPEN Shore power AC panel supply breaker (7). Check for no voltage on the voltage meter.
C) OPEN Boat input breaker (5)
D) OPEN the Shore Power Pedestal breaker (1)
E) Verify cable is not powered. Our shore power cable has an LED light that lights up when it has power to it ... yours may not, if so, just skip this step.
F) Unplug shore power cable (3) from pedestal and boat (stow cable)

No, you do not switch the batteries off. Your boat has some loads that work off DC (like your lights and sump pumps, heads, blowers, etc.) and some that run off AC (like your air conditioner). Keeping the batteries 'on' will allow you to continue to use those items powered by DC. ... We do have the battery charger breaker on the AC distribution OPEN until we see good power to the AC distribution panel.
