Depends are they 12 V batteries or 6 V? 12V in parallel and 6V in series.
If you've connected the inverter to the 2 battery bank, then it should be the positive from the inverter to the positive on battery #1. The ground from the inverter to the ground on battery #2. The Positive and Grounds connected between batteries.
Make sure to size the cross-overs based on the total potential load on the battery since they will be part of the circuit. The Inverter leads only need to be sized for the projected draw of the inverter. Keeping in mind that distance is round trip. (5 feet of distance is a 10 foot circuit).
