Default Next victim

Hey there. Just picked up a 1996 2300sc. Unfortunately the GM engine is shot but hopefully will be able to get out on the water asap!

Welcome aboard

So what is the plan; rebuild the existing engine, rebuilt long block, new long block, new complete engine package?

I had a '97 2300SC and loved it. Great cuddy. Had the 7.4L and it would get up and move. What engine do you have?

Originally I was looking for a replacement long block but after I inspected the engine a little more and also realized that this is. a 5.0 pre vortec, Im on the hunt for a replacement 5.7 vortec drop in. Just gonna reuse my accessories (starter, alternator, manifolds risers etc)

IMO, 200 hp at the crank is anemic for a boat this size. A 300hp vortec 350 should wake it up nicely and put it right on the edge for the Alpha 1 gen 2 outdrive.

As of this moment I haven’t purchased anything but Im shopping hard for the best deal.

Note 1 a pre Vortec intake manifold will not fit a Vortec engine. 12 bolt vs 8 bolt.
Note 2 a Vortec requires and electric fuel pump that needs to be wired to an oil pressure switch for power when running and the starter solenoid for power when starting.

In 2016 I had to repower myself and went from a 5.7 260HP to a Vortec 300HP + and really liked the difference. I have a Bravo 2 so the extra power is not a problem.

Yea, Im looking for a mostly complete engine, 5.7 vortec. I’m gonna transfer accessories and exhaust.

Sometimes its best not to peice things together. Obviously I want to do this job for the least amount possible but at the same tome I want it done right and safe.

Ok so you are looking to buy a power pack engine. Have you examined the exhaust components to ensure they are in good shape to reuse? Were they used in fresh or salt water? If salt you may want to replace them as they typical only last 5 - 10 years depending on the salinity.

This weekend I will start the tear down process and I definitely will be inspecting thr manifolds as I know about their service life.

This boat came from West Virginia, so Im pretty sure most of, if not all fresh water its entire life.


Im thr type of guy that likes to try and get things done the first time and not piece things together.
