Default New owner, also new to boating

Traded my motorcycle for a 1989 Maxum 1700 SR. Since I'm extremely new to watercraft, I have some questions. Probably stupid ones by some opinions, but I'd rather be safe than sorry in and out of the water. First, outboard runs well but when I got it home and parked in the drive, my wife noticed bluish oil dripping. I'm assuming it's the premix from when the gentleman who traded with me started it (with a hose attached). He pumped the primer ball quite a few times. Anyway, I'm looking forward to taking the family out on the water soon. I'll be searching these forums for information. Thanks in advance. Click image for larger version

welcome aboard

Being that its bluish you are probably correct is some 2 -cycle mix

although you should place a rag under it to see where its dripping from as it may be gear lube from the lower unit.

I will do that. It only dripped when the motor was up in "towing position" as i would say as a land lover. Lol. When I put it down it quit. Also it isn't hitting the ground in the picture.

A leaky lower unit would not behave this way. I do not have much experience with O/Bs so hard for me to say.

Had to pull the lower unit to replace the impeller (see photo) and found it is leaking. There's a boot around the shift shaft there that's split. Leaks when in trailering position. Click image for larger version

Well the impeller definitely needs replacing.

Post back on how it's runs once back together.
