I would confirm that possibility..... There is either an internal or external regulator in this system and it's quite possible you "made it angry" by disconnecting the battery while it was running....

The fact that the timing light is intermittent on...

The fact that the timing light is intermittent on number "one" could be several things..... coil, distributor, rotor, cap, ICM (if you have one) plug wires or the light itself may be faulty.... :(...
