Possible but I think the OP is having a mechanic do the repair and they typically don't stray from factory.

Not able to cap it off but if the thru hull fitting is broke on the inside of the boat he could replace the lube line and just fill the drive to the vent hole of the drive. If broken on the outside...

With as tight as the 2400 SCR is back there it's hard to agrue with him. Pulling the engine is not all that hard worst part is rear engine mounts.

Did he quote hours and $'s?
