Sounds like either the idle circuit of the carb...

Sounds like either the idle circuit of the carb is not providing enough fuel due to clogged circuit or a vacuum leak. Probably time for a carb rebuild.

What rpm does it idle at with the throttle advanced?

I do not think it's an electrical issue either. Could be dirty idle circuit as you said.
