If I remember right, the conductive silver goop goes between the base of the ice making unit and the sheet metal that it sits on. Since all the cold comes from the actual ice maker box the air space...

I'd hold onto it. As the units get old the freezers tend to go. The freezer lines are built into the walls of the unit and cannot be serviced once they go.
