New to boat owner 93 2700 SCR big block
 
I'm a new owner of a used 93 2700 SCR with 358 hrs of run time in salt water. Boat has been sitting on a trailer for two years when I bought it. I would like some advice on what I should do with the gas that is in the tank. I was thinking on pumping it out and putting new back in. I'm planning on giving the engine a thorough tune up. i.e new spark plugs, check plug wires, exhaust riser inspection, and engine cylinder compression check. along with checking all rubber penetrating hull to lower drive unit.

Do you know if it's E10 gas? I would remove the fuel filter and dump the contents into a glass jar to look for water and other containments. If you see any solids just pumping the tank dry may not be enough and the tank may need to be flushed to remove gunk.

It will most likely need new bellows and I would replace the gimbal bearing and low shift cable. Also change the gear lube in the drive and engine oil.

Does the previous owner have information on service, such as the last time the manifolds and risers were replaced? I agree with most Mike's list, plus a few more:

Oil & Filter Change
Fuel Filter
Belts
Plugs
Gimbal Bearing
lower shift cable
Drive Lube change
Bellows

Check to make sure that seacocks are moving properly.
clear and inspect seastrainers
Check all hoses for cracking
consider a head pump rebuild kit
check all bilge pumps
Inspect all nylon through hulls (Of they're chalky, they need to be replaced).

Thank you both for your prompt responses. I do not have any answers for the question you have. the owner was not present at the time due to traveling and the person that was storing his boat in his yard had some info for. The gas tank red E when the boat key was turn on so that can mean there is no gas or gauge is not working, i need to investigate this. I'm hoping the gas was not E10 type.

Everything on list posted is in progress to be complete. I have a few question to ask. Where is the best place to get good value parts for the power plant? I was going to inspect the manifolds and risers. I'm thinking they are original parts when bought in 2006 with trailer. I'm sure they will have to be replaced also.

What is the cooler for on the fwd end of the engine. It looked like it had antifreeze in it.

I prefer to use OEM parts and would search the net or local shops for prices. I have used several on line places, Doug Russell, marine power specialist, eBasic,... and have not any issues.

Sounds like the engine is equipped with closed cooling, that cylinder is a heat exchanger and acts like a cars radiator but instead of using air to carry away the heat it uses raw water. There are two types a full and half system, the full cools the engine and exhaust manifolds while the half only cools the engine. In both cases the elbows are raw water cooled.

Can the manifold and riser inspection be preformed using a borescope or just remove the risers to do the inspection.

how is the gas tank flushed out?

Just pull the risers to inspect.

Flushing the tank is something I would hire a licensed company to perform due to the explosive nature of the job.

My rule of thumb is if the part is in the water or has anything to do with water getting into the boat or engine, I use OEM parts. Otherwise, Iíll use aftermarket engine parts, like cap, rotor, belts, etc. I buy almost everything off eBay. Try to build your list and order as much as makes sense from the same seller and request a shipping price to combine everything. And then Walmart actually has good prices on the fuel and oil filters..!

Which ebay marine store do you use and how do you get part numbers for items you are buying for the power plant.
