are you talking about the clunk or chunk when it goes into gear??..that's normal....if it grinds and sounds like sand grinding away...that's not see...there is no clutch for you to engage the fwd/reverse there is an engine cut out which momentarily cuts the engine while you shift..the clunk is the gear synching and slipping into be sure your not doing any can pull the oil plug at the bottom of the drive and check some of the oil for any metal shavings.....

thanks again seapuppy
i checked the oil and no shavings , gimble was replaced no so long ago
is there any way to stop the noise ?

hi i took my boat out yesterday a 2008 1900 sr3 and when i changed into neutral I heard a grinding noise ??
It ran fine on the lake just couldn't put it in neutral. Does anyone know what that can mean?

it could mean alot of things but first thing that comes to mind is the bull gears are gone.....take the boat out of the water.....look at the top of your drive unit...there is a cap with 4 silver star bolts on top....remove those and gently pry that square cap off.....that exposes the bull gear.....look at the gear and see if there's any metal parts or filings floating careful not to loose or damage that oring gasket....

if you see filings...your drive is in need of repair...

oh...and welcome to the zoo...:pound:
