The purpose of the chain is that it is heavy and causes the anchor to lie flat on the bottom. When you pull on it it helps to set the anchor.

I have a 2400 SCR with Lewmar 700G, 25 ft of chain and 100 ft rope. It works great every time.

Calguy,
What depth of water are you anchoring in with only 125' of rode? I have a 2700 SCR with 30' of 5/8" chain and 250' of 1/2' 3 strained nylon line. I try to anchor in 20'-30' of water and never more than 50'.

Vessel: LOA 39' 0" (22,000lbs)

I have about 125 ft of 5/16 galvanized G4 chain and 150 ft of 3-strand 5/8 line and a 44lb anchor. I anchor in between 8 - 20 feet of water. Average is typically 10-12 feet. The line has never been in the water.

The benefit of an oversized anchor and an all chain rode is I can anchor around 4:1 - 5:1 with no issues. We regularly ride out blows of 20-25 mph winds at 5:1 with a sand or sand/clay bottom with no issues. Over 30mph winds I tend to not sleep well, then laugh when the anchor is so buried the windlass struggles to break it free from the seabed.
