Default Thoughts on a 2700 SCR with 5.7 MerCruiser - buy it?

Thanks in advance for help and advice. My wife and I are looking at a 2700SCR tomorrow. The owner has had a lot of work done and candidly said that it is underpowered and will only cruise at about 18 mph. It has a 5.7 MerCruiser. Is this boat underpowered? Or, does it need a different prop?

I know Maxum makes a good boat, my only concern is that I won't be happy with the performance. The current owner says the boat won't plane with 5-6 people on board...

Any and all input gratefully accepted!

Well, we just got back from looking at the boat. It's in decent shape, needs a fair amount of TLC. My biggest concern/question is that at 4000 rpm she only goes 17-18 knots (measured by GPS). Plus the temp climbed to nearly 250 in a brief run at 4000. At slower speeds, rpms at 3200, the engine was still over 200 degrees. Is this normal?

I'm wondering if the boat is improperly propped. The bottom was recently cleaned, so I know it isn't crud on the bottom slowing it down.

The aft berth is pretty small, too small for an adult couple, IMO. My wife didn't get a giddy feeling, so I think we're giving this one a pass. If the engine and speed situation were easy to solve, we'd be more interested, so I'd really like to hear what it should be running with a 5.7 liter engine.

Thanks!

Rob

Rob welcome to the zoo..
it sounds like this boat is out of synch...meaning that there is issues with the overheat problems....the correct temp for the boat should be about 175-180degs.....anything over that ..the boat is working too hard or has cooling issues..what drive does it have..???...my 2700 had the 6.2ltr engine....it just screamed at cruise speed (gps) 30mph ....wot was 42.8mph @ 5280rpm....so...the 5.7ltr should be at wot between 4200-4800rpm.....if you have the B3 drive...then it should plane with no problems...having 5-6 people you need to adjust the way you apply pwr...put the tabs all the way down..drives down....then hit the throttle....should take off and plane ok...it will struggle but you may have to shift someone fwd....

but if your only getting 18mph at 4000 rpm...there is something seriously wrong here....have the boat surveyed properly...look at the condition of the hull..is it dirty??.....wrong prop...if you have the b3 drives..you should have 22-24 pitched props....B2's should have something like 21" pitched props....

SP :hello:

I have a 1998 2700 with a 5.7L on B2 2:1. I have 17 pitch prop OEM, and it cruises at 25 mph fully loaded. The engine runs at 4000 rpm to accomplish this. Planing is 23 mph on my boat. I did put a newer vortec 5.7L in it. It would also do 25 with the original engine but I don't remember the details. I tried a 19 pitch prop but it was too much. I ordered a new 17 pitch to try it. BTW, I went from 18-19 mph cruise to 25 mph cruise by having the prop cleaned up and additional cup added.
