Default Propane canisters for BBQ

Just got a barbecue for my boat. Where's the best place to buy the propane canisters? West Marine, Home Depot, etc? Does the brand matter? I have the Magma "Cabo".

Just figured out that Wally World = Wall Mart. I just remember the Chevy Chase movie.... They opened one near me, I'll check it out. Thanks!

Also the sporting goods stores and Target have them in the camping stuff section if it's more convenient. We got a Coleman last summer that takes them too. A friend gave us a great idea that we've used over and over; thinly sliced skirt steak on a wooden disposable skewer , marinated in a teriyaki / honey sauce overnight. 2 minutes on the bbq and everyone is happy holding their own 'steak pop.' I can easily down about 15 of them at a sitting.

Al

sounds like you got enough feedback on where to buy the canisters

my questions are what model boat and where are you going to mount your new grill

I have 2600SE and I just haven't found a satisfactory place to mount

Love to hear your plan

Thanks

I purchased the single mount (for 7/8 or 1" round rail)from Magma ($42) and according to them it should mount on the transom railing. I'd like to be able to operate it from the swim platform while the gang is relaxing at the table area. From what I've seen this should work out but unfortunately I won't try it out until May. (I'm in shrink wrap) I have a 2002 2900 SCR with 7/8 round rail at the stern. Just got back from FLA where I ran a friend's 24' Grady White. Can't wait for the summer!

After you buy a couple small propane bottles you can buy a hose and adapter that lets you refill them from a 20 pound bottle. If you have room on your swim platform you can use a post mount.

Folks; what about storing these propane tanks? Are you all suggesting them being stored in the engine compartment? I've been told the propane gas can "settle" in the bilge area and the risk for a "kaboom" is high if you do that. I mounted my Magma (Newport Model I believe) on the grab rail off the transom and use the disposable 1 lb cannisters but they can get expensive and they're not very environmentally-friendly after they're empty. It would be great to have a more "permanent" mounting system with a hose going into the valve instead of the dozens of cannisters we buy every season.

well...that is a problem..but propane has to be out of the bottle to settle into an engine bay.....do I suggest you store it in the engine bay??...nope...not in the least...I store mine in the aft transom locker in an igloo cooler....I suggest you find a place to store yours either in the salon or a stowage locker in either the transom locker where you put your pwr cord..or...in the cockpit seating stowage...NEVER ever stow it in the engine bay....

You can refill the 1 pound green bottles at home with the adapter and hose connected to a 20 pound bottle. Taat equates to roughly $1 per little bottle, not counting the cost of the hose.

Glad we all think alike on storing propane tanks in the engine compartment, SeaPuppy! Dronthelake I never even THOUGHT one could refill the little, green 1 lb propane bottles but I suppose it's possible!
