Default Maxum 2400 SE or 2500 SCR ? Advice Wanted

I currently own a 1900 SR and am finally ready to make the jump to a cruiser. The wife and I want another Maxum so we have narrowed it down to a 24 or 25 footer. It would be the two of us with the dog or occasionally a few guests cruising around Lake Mohave.

I am looking for help with the trailered weight amounts since my truck is rated at 8,000 lbs towing. I have not been able to find the original brochures that had the measurements. Most of our trips will be 250 mile trips towing flat roads with empty tanks (gas cheap in AZ) or 30 miles to the ocean once I get used to the boat. I will get a bigger truck some time soon but I want to get the boat first.

I really like the 2500 due to the rear berth open-step layout but it also seems to weigh quite a bit more than the 2400. Currently there are a few of both models available locally for between $17K and $20K and that is right in my price range. I am not looking for AC or a genny at this time however if it was available I might pay a little more.

I am also looking for advice for differences between the two models I may not be aware of. My boat mechanic is 30 minutes away and said as long as I go with a Maxum and Mercruiser he has me covered.

Thank you in advance,

Tim Daleo

Hi Tim my 97' 2400 SCR has a dry weight of 5000 lbs. adding a trailer, fuel, water, and gear would probably get it around 7500 lbs so close to your trucks max rating.

IMO the mid berth on the 2400 is fine but the forward V berth is useless for adults.

Maxum only used Mercs so no options here other than the engine size and drive.

I do not know details about the 2500 so I cannot comment.

I would go with the one that best fits what you are looking for and is in good condition, low hours and was take care of.

Mike,

Thank you for the reply. I have looked a local 2400 SE ($17K) and the guy tows it with a F150. I think I will be ok until I tell the wife we need to upgrade trucks.

The 2400 SE was in decent shape although it had a replacement 5.0 and Alpha drive. It needed a major cleaning and had some spider cracks at the corners of the transom where the fuel filler is. He did have a radar tower and plotter which was very cool. It also needed carpet, a new door and had holes in the bimini. I figure a couple grand to bring it up to date?

There is also a member here with a 25' out of my price range but it is a beautiful boat.

Tim do you plan to offer a low price to cover that couple of grand in repairs?

Correction, it is a 2001 2400 SCR not an SE. It has a NADA of about $17K with the Raymarine radar and tower so it is priced ok. Not sure if we will offer yet but if we did it would we lower for sure. It is an ok boat but really needs some TLC so we need to think about it some more. There are a few more local boats in the same price range. We have thousands of boats here in Southern California but not that many are trailerable Maxums

Also look at the gas fill and supply to engine lines for cracks, normal for this age boat and will need to be replaced if there are cracks. Fill line is about $10 per foot.

That would be cool but she usually just wins in the three digit amounts. Your 2500 has the deck sink, the rear compartment, the sliding door and the steps that are all beautiful options! I look at it every day online

The wife broke even in Vegas so we went with a 2004 Maxum 2400 SE. We met with the owner Kevin on Tuesday evening and loved the boat. He took me out this morning (Friday) and it handled great. Ran at 175° the whole time and got up easily. It needs a good cleaning, a shower drain and some misc parts but overall it is a wonderful boat.

We did the deal after the sea trial and I drove home a few hours later. I got 12.4 mpg home towing the trailer in moderate traffic. Not bad.

Love the swim platform, Maxum fell short here.

Enjoy

They used a container crane to haul it? Seems like overkill, but pretty cool!

It is really sturdy and fits the contours well. A big logo on the swim platform shows Swimplatforms.com

The now previous owner had a boat parking space at Dana Point and for a little extra each month they forklift your boat and trailer to the hoist so it saves your trailer. I thought it was very cool. The whole process took seven minutes. I got a great look at the hull too!

me too. Our swim platform is way too small on our 2800 scr but I don't want to pay the big bucks for an aftermarket.
other than that we love that boat! Maxums are a great boat for the money.

Oh, its not as big a crane as I thought. From that first picture, I thought it was the crane for the big container ships.

4 ton crane seemed cool but it has a width limit of around 30' so it is only used on the smaller boats.

The swim platform was already on this boat thank goodness. I can just imagine they are expensive and hard to get lined up right. I am also not a fan of putting holes in a boat so the installation would probably freak me out.

Should I start a new thread since I bought the boat?

I would start a new thread for each project.
