Default Looking at a old Maxum - Need some advice

Hi,
I am really interested in a maxum as a boat I am looking to purchase. It is older 1990 2400scr. It obviously needs a little work but looking at it did not turn me away. It has a new 7.4 Merc with 80hours, unsure if the outdrive is original. The carpet is new. I think it really just needs a little TLC. Needs some upholstery work, but not too much as some was already done. It needs exterior paint and a gel coat (is gel coating even recommended anymore?) anyway. Any insight would be awesome.

First welcome aboard

That's not a SCR (cruiser) may be SC or SE.

Have you heard the engine run? Taken it out on the water?

Noted in the engine picture that the clamps are missing on the t-stat housing hoses, why? Do you have proof the engine was replaced?

At a minimum get a hand held IR temp gun and measure the engine temp and temp on the manifolds and elbows.

Worst case is a wet sand with 2000 grit followed by polishing and wax.

Go to yachtworld and see what this year and model are being listed for.

Two things concern me about this boat. You can't repower with a 7.4 MPI for $6200. This guy would be selling the boat for less than what he paid to repower it.

Replaced carpets are often accompanied with replaced decks. Decks would be replaced if they were soft. They would be soft because of water intrusion and rot. Water intrusion and rot rarely stop at the deck and often make their way into the stringers. Replacing stringers is like replacing the spine of the boat.

Make sure this guy didn't get in over his head, then slap down some carpeting, button the thing up and decide run.

If you're REALLY interested, get a Surveyor and make sure they take moisture readings of the decks and stringers specifically.

Thanks for the reply fellas. It helps a ton and I am glad that you guys are willing to help me out. Sounds like getting involved for 6200 is not worth it.

The 7.4 has not been produced for years. Maybe a transplant however 80 hours are low for as long as this engine has not been offered.

I got a little more info from him today, i guess the 7.4 came from a local dealer and it had 382 and he added 80 too it. With a bravo 2 outdrive

Did you find out why the hose clamps are missing? left off when winterized?

Check the deck for soft spots. This may still be a good buy.

Mmjwr,
I am meeting with him again next week. I found a Surveyor i might use. He charges 12$/ft. I tried to find a similar boat on yachtworld but was unable to locate one. I am not sure how much the going price is.

yep they are in the cup holder. why are they off? not re-installed after winterization? Just asking.
