When I leave the boat for anytime I always leave the engine hatch open just a little to let the air circulate. It certainly pays to have a look and a sniff before turning anything on. A friend of mine recalls watching an open cruiser sitting abeam him and he said I could smell petrol. When the driver hit the ignition there was an explosion and the guy sitting on the engine hatch was ejected with his fishing rod into the sea. The rest of the crew received flash burns. They were probably lucky the engine hatch was not secured properly. He said it all looked very funny but it could have been disastrous.

I set the battery switch to the house side when the boat is off. the battery switch in the engine compartment. I switch to the Starter battery when starting. This forces me to open the engine hatch and check for fumes prior to starting.

The 35' has an electric hatch so that makes life easy. I don't know about other models but I have had boats where you have to move the furniture to get the hatch open and this is a pain.
