Default Brake manual for my trailer? Under a 1997 1900 SR.

Is there a manual for the trailer? I purchased my boat this year from an owner that had launched regularly in salt water. They flushed/cleaned the boat well, but the trailer's braking system has suffered and is inoperable. This winter I'm gonna tackle them!!!

What make is the trailer? Did you try googling it or emailing the manufacture? It's usually easier to just unbolt the entire unit and install new ones.

Good question. I wasn't aware there was more than one trailer option. I'm not at home, yet trying to get some research done. I can report back later with trailer make. It's a single axle galvanized with surge brake setup.

I'm not sure who maxum used. If you have the tag title at home it should say.

Are te breaks drum or disc. Disc are te best way to go in salt water and can be used in place of drum units. They will bolt right to the sae flange on the axle

They're drums. I plan on owning the boat for many years and don't anticipate ever having it in salt water. Google's not helping. I'll have to put my eyes on the trailer.

Let us know what you figure out

BTY: since they are drum I believe you will find they need a complete replcemen of all th eparts and IMO it will be easier and cheaper to switch to disc. Even though you said you won't be in salt water disc are still the wat to go IMO and will be a lot less trouble down the road.

Google a trailer place near you that repairs trailers and compare prices

The make of the trailer is almost, if not completely, irrelevant as no trailer manufacturer I'm aware of uses their own parts, they all source their brake parts from Tie Down, Kodiac, etc. Look on the side of the surge unit - supplier name will likely be there.

Regardless, the parts are pretty standardized in regards to replacement. Any decent trailer brake supplier will have everything you need, including already assembled and ready to install, drum brake assemblies. As Mike said, and given that is was dunked in salt water a lot, the entire drum assemblies are likely a mess and it would be easier to just replace each assembly. Remove the hubs, the brake lines, then remove the four bolts that hold the backing plate to the axle flange. Off with the old, on with the new.

If you end up replacing the drum assemblies instead of rebuilding them with only the parts needed, disks are worth a look but they are, of course, going to be more expensive. Keep in mind that if your drum coupler/surge unit is still servicable, but you decide to switch to disks, you'll have to replace your surge unit with one that is compatible with disks. The drum unit isn't.

Thanks for the replies gents. I've been out of town and won't be back home near the boat till end of the week. I'll be researching in the meantime.

Appreciated.

I think the trailer manufacturer is Karavan. I have surge braking with discs and it works extremely well. 2001 1800 SR.

In 1997 Maxum used Escort trailers. The 1900SR came with model WT18GBB-V for the Galvanized option.
Escort is out of business and as Dan already stated, trailer parts are pretty universal. Just need size of brakes and maybe style and you should be able to find everything you need at any Trailer parts store.
I think the most important thing to make sure you get the right stuff is Axle Size (weight rating). I would guess that one is a 3500Lb axle, though it could possible be a 5000lb (not very common though).

I have a copy of the Karavan Trailer owners Manual, it is from a 2007 trailer, which came with a 2007 2100SC3. I cannot find a date on the manual, however it has the following reference
Lit - 00114 - NA-A-1 Owners Manual.

In the Hydraulic Surge Brake Section it has an effective date of 3/7/01.

This manual includes breakdown, adjustment and troubleshooting for the brake system.
Happy to scan and upload a copy, do we have an upload section?

I also have a copy of the Sports Boat Owners Supplement dated 2004 for
1800MX
1800SR3
1900SR3
2000SR3
2100SC
2200SR3

which I could scan and upload

Paul
