I owned one with that engine (the 4.3 V6 Carb) so can answer any Q's you may have.... what do you need to know?

I personally rate the hull as better than the current one.... though it has to be propped right.

Thank you, so what prop would you recommend, i will contact you later today to let u know the one im using, i got a deal from a friend for a high five prop that was used once on his regal before he sold the boat, i swapped it for a 2nd hand tool box worth £100, think i got a good deal?

I basically would like to know anything worth knowing about it,
good points bad points if any! I am new to boating at this level, only had a 14ft shakespeare with a 55 yamaha outboard before, no frills kinda boat!! had that and a few jetskis.

You'll want a 21" high five... which are about £500 so looks like you got a steal of a deal!

The 1800 Maxum (year 2000) is a decent classy boat for its size. Bet the dashboards flaking on it though (same with the glovebox). they all do it so don't be put off by that. it can be repainted with relative ease.. just time consuming to get the dash off.

Watch for the stitching coming undone on the seats... was a problem back then and loads did it (mine included).

The engine will likely have a "Dieseling" issue.. most do. when you turn it off it keeps running for a few seconds. don't be put off as whilst it is a pain.. they all do it. some can be fixed, some can't. Either way, thats mercruisers issue, not yours

There aren't really any major issues other than that - decent, solid boats.

Haha, yeah the dash and glovebox are flaking, its an eyesore, the interior is near perfect apart from that! Not noticed any stitching problems yet thankfully.
The prop numbers are 48.815760A45 21P, so yeah its a 21 pitch, is this the best prop i could be using and do u know what sort of performance figures i should be acheiving using this prop?
I had major acceleration issues when i took the boat out for the 1st time with the original prop on,revs were peaking at around 3800-4000rpm at WOT it was taking an eternity to build up and get on plane, around a minute or so to get a max speed of 33-35mph! Ive since found there to be a cylinder with only 50psi compression and the rest to be between 170psi and 200psi, so im sure that wouldnt have helped! i bought the boat as a non start so was expecting problems!!!

The boat, with the 21" should hit 50mph or very close to.

Once thing to be aware of with the 1800 is that it can be a bit bogged down when trying to get out of the hole... best to have zero excess weight in the back (don't put people in the rear seats unless you are out of seats elsewhere. I found an easy way to discourage people sitting there was to make up the bathing platform with them (lift then up and swivel them.. you'll see it makes one big sunbathing platform.

Revs should be climbing to around 5000rpm with that prop...

Thanks for the tips. I take it 5000rpm is safe enough on that engine?

Not for the carbed version. Owners manual says not to exceed 4400. I've pushed it to 4800 before and it seemed stressed.

The prop that Brit Rider is referring to is the stainless steel, High Five (five blade) prop. It's meant to get you out of the hole quick. If the one you are looking at has an aluminum 3 blade, it's not the same. Aluminum flexes when thrust is applied. Stainless doesn't. Although stainless doesn't care for logs or rocks either. High Five is the brand name prop from Mercury.

Good luck. We loved our 1800SR3 on the lakes and rivers in VA, but it's too small down here in FL out on the Gulf. We've been looking for a bigger boat for sometime now.

Wow! Looks like I'd had one too many glasses of the vino...

Racer2c is correct.... but I'm standing by my prop choice

the prop i got with the boat was a 3 blade aluminium one, it was pretty wrecked, the one i have fitted is the brand mercury high 5 with 21 pitch.

thanks for the info, question tho, will using the 21 pitch high 5 prop cause the revs to climb above 4400rpm and if it does how can i control that???
