Default 2008 Maxum 2700 SE survey

Hi all

I am a new member and you were all so helpful when I was making my choice between a 2700 SE and a 2400 SE. In the end, weighing everything up, I have chosen the 2700 SE.

It is the big day on Tuesday and I am having her surveyed and doing a sea trial. I would be really grateful for your experience again for any pointers as to what I should be looking out for on this boat, so I can make sure the surveyor pays particular attention!

This is a very important day for you and your boat. First the survey....should be done on the hard and not in the water. When your surveyor is done he will go though every system on your boat and if their are any problems will discuss them you. You will get a book that he has put together for your records of everything he has done and the results in writing.

Are you getting a mechanical survey also? This can be helpful if have questions about the engine/s or outdrives, but usually not included in a regular survey.

Any problems use that against the selling price as leverage.

The sea trial is the final chapter is your pursuit of this boat to let you know if this is the boat for you. Let the surveyor drive the boat and you watch and listen. Everything from top speed (using his GPS and not the boat's speedometer) to checking for leaks, noises and general getting up on plane processes that the boat should do with out issues. If there are issues discuss them and again can be used as leverage at closing for the price of the boat. This is a new boat for you so ask questions!

Thanks a lot. Yes, we have booked a mechanical survey with the engineers to look at the engine and the leg.
We are looking forward and will definitely let you all know how with get on, together with some pictures.

Roger covered it.

Mechanical survey on the hard to check the hull for signs of rot in core material, condition of glass. Drive (leg) should be checked for signs of water and metal filling in the lube, engine should be compression tested, oil analysis, temp reading with an IR senser while running at operating temp.

Other systems should be checked, water, head, waste, stove, ....

Hi all

I said that I would let you know how it went. There is good news and bad news.

First the good. The mechanical checks went well and the engine is fine. There are some problems with a sensor and the electrics need attention because she was imported from America and not everything has been converted to Spanish voltage. All of this the vendor has agreed to make good.

Now the bad news. The moisture level readings in the hull were high and the surveyor suspects that she has all the negative pointers to be a candidate for osmosis at some point but could be within two years. I don't know whether to treat this as a negotiating point or the kiss of death.

Once again, your views and opinions are needed.

I would call it kiss of death. I just spent nearly the purchase price of my boat to have the rotted transom replaced.

A few questions.

1 was the boat just pulled and is the bottom painted? Bottom paint will hold moisture for weeks.

2 was the bad reading taken on transom and stringers? Inside readings?

3 any signs of blisters and or repairs?

The boat had been taken from the water 24 hours previously and the old anti fouling was cleaned off before the surveyor arrived.

My surveyor said the moisture reading were abnormally high.. He scraped it back to the gel coat and said "visual indicators of blisters starting to appear". He reckoned blisters would appear in 2 years. A second opinion was given by a surveyor employed by the vendor. He denied any signs of blisters or osmosis, but agreed that the moisture readings were abnormally high.

This was on the exterior hull. He could not test the interior hull because he could not get to it.

On the plus side, no works or attempted repairs had been done.

When he scraped down to the gel coat was the reading still high!

I just wanted to thank you for all your advice. Having weighed up all the pros and cons, I did indeed walk away. I decided that to buy her was too risky.
