Cool faster

to go faster I think a clean bottom light load no water no waste top down for wind drag you might go a little faster at lower rpm .At wot I think it burns 10 gallons per hour???.You could check into a different prop as well.my 5.7 had 230 hours and blew a head gasket sucked a valve $3,000.rebuild and I ran it very easy so watch the high rpm merc used crap head gaskets.

My 97 2400scr 5.7LX Alpha 1, 19 pitch high five will top out at 38mph gps with a good load( 2adults 2kids full fuel, water, beer etc.)@4500rpm. If I am lighter I will usually see about 42mph. I find speed is really dependent on your weight and water conditions. I only ever open it up occasionally and then for only a minute or so......its hard on it..you shouldn't be to concerned about top speed, but your mid range cruise speed....it cruises all day long at 28-30mph at about 3600rpms.....cheers

My Mercruiser manual says to never run at peak WOT for more than 2 minutes. I rarely go over 4000rpm. No need.
