The rust around the riser is typically a sign the the interface is leaking.

Good thing you are replacing the exhaust.

Yea. My other motor has dry joint exhaust, and they look great. Ordered new gaskets and putting it back together.

What really keyed me in to the starboard exhaust was this picture from September. The exhaust had just been pulled and inspected a few months before this pic. Compare that to the pic I posted earlier, and noticed just how much the rust has grown.

Well, got the project all done. That starboard exhaust was just starting to leak, so I think I timed the exhaust replacement perfectly.

Both engines were running beautiful, until I put it under load, and port head gaskets blew again.

I used sierra head gaskets, and I had my doubts about them, as they didn't have compression rings around the cylinder bore, and no top/bottom markings.... But it was the right part number, so I went ahead with it. Haven't torn down yet, but I'm picking up a set of mercruiser gaskets today.

Cross your fingers that I don't find other issues when I tear in.

Did you also check the head and block deck for flatness?

Heads got magnafluxed, decked, and a valve job while they were out. Did not check the block though, I don't have an accurate enough straight edge to really do it.

The heads were decked, so they were not flat. This would make me question the block's flatness, may want to consider getting an accurate straight edge otherwise you could be wasting your time and $'s

If the heads were not flat, there is a probability the block is not as well. I suspect if you check it, you will discover it isn't.

Intake manifold just came off and there is evidence of water in the intake ports of the cylinders I got water out if. I'm wondering if maybe the intake gaskets failed, not the head gaskets, and poured water in through the intake. Grabbing a compression tester.

If there is normal compression all the way around, I am considering not pulling the heads. And putting it back together with better intake gaskets.

Thoughts?

How much was shaved off the heads? Just wondering if too much can be removed that could cause the intake not to seat properly.

I guess if the compression is good I would try reinstalling the intake as well.

Nope, no compression. Head gaskets gone. Think I may not have cleaned the block well enough before reassembly. 😳

To be honest... I probably will. I'm pushing 40. I think if you average it out, I've built an engine a year... You'd think I would know better.

Well I have 15 years on you and I still make mistakes, it's all part of life. The best we can learn is to accept our mistakes without being to hard on our selfs.

All back together. Ran a couple miles down river and back. Seems okay so far. Gonna head downtown tomorrow.

I think I have too much growth to get on plane. Looks like a bottom job is up next!

I'll take having to clean the bottom over engine issues any day.

Enjoy the holiday

Engine held together! Ran 20+ miles at 6-7 kts. Tried to push on plane a couple of times, but there is just too much drag. Don't want to push the engine too hard until im sure that the bottom is clean.

Had a great time at the concert, first boat, right next to the stage.

Looks like my starboard bellows failed. Taking on water. Coming from the transom assembly somewhere.

The marina I had planned to use is booked up and can't haul me. So... Now I'm trying to find someone that can haul me tomorrow, or i may have to leave it in the water for a week praying the bilge pump doesn't fail.

Oh, and I'm out of town for work this week.... Ugh...

Not good, hope you have someone who can keep a check on the boat if it has to stay in the water for the week.

My fiance will be home, but not 24 hours a day. Thinking about rigging up an extra auto bilge pump.

Even if one of the other marinas can take me tomorrow, they all close at noon. Couldn't make it there on one engine by then. Not going to run the starboard with a leaking bellows. Lost an outdrive that way on a previous boat.
