I disconnected it at the alarm side. I also disconnected the temp switch (gauge if that is what you mean) first to ensure I saw the temp gauge drop while disconnected. When I disconnected the temperature sensor (alarm side) it didn't go off for my ride home. I will be replacing in the next few days.

Now I am following you. When you said the alarm side I thought you meant at the helm but you are saying the alarm sendor vs the gauge sendor.
