Sure looks like the same problem I have. I was told that my boat sat for a while too. Maybe long enough to cause hardening of the intake gasket allowing the water that sits on top of this to seep into the motor.
My swim platform is above the motor too. Also my cover will weep the water into the boat as the cover sits on the back of the back seat. I will bet that the water wicks down the seat or the carpeted wood that the seat is mounted to, then drip onto the motor.
I plan on making a shield to detour the water to drip away from the motor.

I think you might be correct. There was a rust spot on the outside on top of the intake manifold. The water could have puddled there and dripped into the engine.

I am having a hard time seeing how water onto if the intake would get into every intake runner. I could see it entering the carb and doing so.

It seems that the inner 2 runners on each head were much worse than the outer 2.Click image for larger version

The inner ones had scaley flakey rust almost blocking the passage. The outer 2 just had surface rust on the inside. Its hard to see in the pic.
But I agree its odd. The inside of the carb channel in the manifold is pretty rusty too.
Hopefully this rules out the exhaust manifold because I want to reuse them.

This is exactly what I would expect if water went down the carb. Shorter run to the center passages and they usually have 2 planes to tune length for center and ends. The center are in a higher plane on the intake hence water gets to them first.

OK, now for the next silly question. Why are there 2 temp senders? Click image for larger version

Do I need both and do they need to be exact replacements?

Yes, one is the temp sensor that connects to the temp gauge the other is the temp warning switch that connectors to the alarm buzzer circuit.

You can probably just go over them with a little emery cloth to get off the tarnish. You can also test them with an ohm meter, they don’t often go bad.

On a side note… what was in that glass?

Please make sure to take a wire wheel on a cordless to all the belt pulley groves, best thing I did.. Eliminates all that belt squeaking when it’s cold.

You’ll soon be here…

ALSO notice that timing mark on the harmonic balancer…. Make sure you drop the distributor back in the correct cam grove. You don’t even want to try and correct it IN the boat.

Yeah, I think I will try cleaning them first. Even if they are bad they are easy to replace. Now that I know what they are and all.
A lost weekend was in the glass. LOL
Beautiful motor, my long block will be ready tomorrow. I am going to watch them run it.
I learned about the distributor the hard way. One put in 180 off-made pretty fire come out of the carb. The other 1 goove off and couldn't time it right.

Will I be able to use the same ignition control module? The new engine will have the 4 bll and rollers.

Yes no reason you cannot use the existing ignition. It is not wired to the carb nor calibrated to a 2 vs. 4 bbl. Roller cam, lifters, rockers have no impact, just less friction which won't steal power.

I don't know what is going on at Motor Works in Spokane.
Bob told me the motor would be ready on Tues. Then he said Wed. and that he would call me. Never called. This morning (thurs) I called and he said he would get back to me. I almost feel like I'm bothering them.

So they finally told me to come in tomorrow at 9 am. I hope they build engines better than make schedules.

I hear you, many small business march to their own drummer, address reoccuring customers first. Can sort of understand that but if you are not happy you won't become one. Then they probably sized you up and figured that out.

A little extra time is worth it if they have actually done a good job. Are they using your intake, carb, exhaust etc? Is this just break-in or an actual dynamometer?

I’ve thought about this a lot and I’m NOT underestimating your abilities or know how, please don’t think that’s what I’m alluding to. I understand skill levels vary and some folks just are not conferrable doing some things. I also bought a long block FROM EBAY!! The guy had stellar feedback so I took a shot in the dark because I don’t and will never own a machine shop. It worked out great, they did work that I approve of and I’m not an average guy. (see Chevelle from earlier) I accept nothing but the best and reading, learning and perfecting something is a lot of what these hobbies are all about. Sure… floating around is great with half naked girls and a cool buzz….. but knowing you made most of what you are floating in/on is the best feeling of all.

I respect anyone that has gone to the lengths you have to make something nice and if there is anything I can offer you as far as advice please don’t hesitate to ask. I paid 1,800 including shipping for my Long block btw and it was totally worth it. May I ask what you paid? Right after I installed the new motor I added the Corse/captains call with the electronic switchable diverters. NOW THOSE where some hard holes to cut!

Oh please, I question my abilities and know how every day. LOL

Motor Works in Spokane turned out to be great! Turns out the problem was they didn't have the correct intake manifold in stock. Bob called me and told me the problem and I found an Edelbrock manifold.

I dropped it off this morning and came back latter for the run. It was just the test stand, no dyno.

What a wonderful noise! Pictures and video coming soon.

The guy guesses 325 hp. woohooo!
