I removed part of the enclosure and I was able to lay down on my side. I also put boat cushions down on the top of the engine and laid on top with my head under the inside of the swim platform. It was very tight.

Well, both. I plan to buy a long block so I can get out on the water sooner. I am also going to rebuild the old one for later.

Brand new long block or a rebuilt one?

How many bolts are on the intake manifold? 12 bolts per vortec, 8 bolts vortec. Long blocks don't come with an intake in a lot of cases. I had bought a brand new 4.3 long block and paid extra to get a new intake as I was going from pre to post vortec.

There are 12 bolts. Its a '97. I was going to get a rebuilt long block. I looked at US Engines in Seattle and also Motor Works in Spokane. MotorWorks has a rebuilt roller long block for $1838.00 + $300 core + $150.00 for the tin.

Is there a benefit to going to the Vortec?

Higher HP rating, however i just noticed from your pics that you have a mechanical fuel pump which the vortec doesn't support.

My old engine has a 2 barrel carb, should I order the new one with a 4 bbl?

I would think a 2bbl would provide enough power for a 20' boat. Do you plan to do any water sports? Changing to a 4 bbl will mean a new carb, intake, and rerouting the fuel line. Your call for ~ 20HP.

I would stick with the rebuilt long block you priced. While you are buying tin (oil pan, valve cover, and timing chain cover) things such as water pump and intake are not included. Using the old intake should not be an issue however for a boat this old I would get a new water pump.

So I ordered my long block today from Motor Works in Spokane. I went with the 4 bbl set up as I need a new carb anyway. They charged me $60 for an intake manifold. Roller cam and lifters. I am going to have the engine hot run for $300, they said they would run it on the bench for 20 minutes and I could watch. It should be ready next Tuesday.
Now to get the boat ready, rot control and new fiberglass and gelcoat in the bilge.

What about the water pump?

The 4bbl will require a new flame arrestor as the throat is wider.

I suggest a new raw water pump impeller in the I/O as well.

Needs a new water pump, the old one is weeping.

I hope thats all I need in the I/O.

I wanted to change over to thru-transom exhaust as well, any thoughts?

I would go with a system that allows you to switch between thru-transom and underwater

gelcoat/resin I would just buy from a local marine store.

The other stuff where you can get the best price including shipping. May try googling each, e-bay, ...
