Water Issue

Need help. My water system when connected to the marine water supply (garden hose) is filling up my onboard water tank. It fills up the tank and then comes out of the overfill. I can only use my onboard system with the pump now. Any suggestions on what could be the problem?

Bad check valve in your pump?



Or is your system plumbed that way, and there is a valve you need to shut off?

Sounds like you boat is set up to only run from the fresh water tank as was standard.

To run directly off a hose there should be a check valve that closes due to the hose water pressure to isolate the tanks feed to the water pump.

I added a dockside connection to mine by teeing in to the pressure line after the water pump. This relies on the check valve inside my pump to prevent water from flowing into the tank.



I am thinking of adding a line from the dockside water around to the other side of the pump, with a manual valve so that I can fill the tank like yours is doing.



There are also automatic valves out there that do the same thing. Yours could have this automatic system, and its malfunctioning. Could have a manual valve that is currently open, or could have a bad check valve in the pump, however, if that was the case, your water pump would run nearly continuously, and would never just pump up and stop.

Where does the shorewater connector T into the pressure system?

I would expect it to be after the pressure pump and accumulator tank (if one is installed). I would expect there to be a check valve the pressure pump or on the outlet (and a strainer on the inlet). I would suggest an anti-siphon valve at the shorewater inlet as well, to prevent emptying you water tank from spigots further down the dock.
