Default Problem with starting and lowering Trim 1800 SR3

Hi

Maxum 1800 SR3 2004

When I attempt to lower the trim or start up the engine (4.3 Mercruiser) I get a chattering sound. I have replaced the battery but the noise is still there. It sounds like a chattering solenoid but I doubt the starter solenoid and the trim solenoid have both decided to fail at the same time. Any ideas? Maybe a loose connection? But where? Help!!!!

welcome to the zoo....it's kinda slow here ....so...from what I'd think about ...I'd check all the connections going to the battery and starter...if the connections are corroded..just like your car...it will be resistive and not a full amperage would get to the solenoid....also...check the solenoid for the outdrive to make sure the connections aren't corroded either........so...check that...get a battery cleaner..that thing with the wire brush the terminals and check the battery switches too....

hope this helps..

Well guys, I have sorted the problem. Yes!!!!

After checking all the connections, during my investigations I found that the large red wire running from the battery to the cut-out switch ( The switch you operate with a plastic key ) was getting warm. High resistance I thought after several attempts at lowering the trim and trying to start the engine. I by passed the cutout switch and everthing worked as it should. A new switch was fitted for 10 euros and we were away! Fabulous!!!

Hope this helps someone else.
